American Flag- Reconstructed Using Everyday items

Course Overview

To design, and make your version
of the American Flag.

Many of you have been feeling deeply concerned about the state of our country with so many unsettling events occurring simultaneously. This is a chance to think about it and make a fun easy piece of art over the course of 3 Wednesdays in August/Sept.  Make a statement about the injustice you see happening all around you and how you’d like it to be. Use the flag as your method of communication.  You can use the traditional colors, or not. Use any material you’d like but it must resemble the American  flag with stars and stripes. It can be paper newspaper clippings, rocks, mixed media, glass, plastic, beads, metal, shell or something off the wall!  The important thing is to speak to your idea of what the flag represents, now currently. What’s wrong, what could be better?  Be funny, be serious, but be thoughtful most of all. This is about social commentary. Keep it G rated,  this is about fun NOT about partisanship, don’t go there! Include a one paragraph statement about what your flag means to you.

Optional Visual or Reading Research

Google images of the Flag of the USA, it’s background, variations, Betsy Ross, Black lives matter, the founding of the United States, Current Social issues……

1) Most thought provoking ( I did NOT say nasty!)

2) Most creative use of Material

3) Most Amusing

4) BEST OF SHOW– Hits all the bases

Course Materials

Participants will choose their own materials. Just make sure it stays together long enough to take a pix of it. and submit is via Email Us.

  • Size- Is up to you, but this is supposed to be simple and fun so keep that in mind.
  • Location- See above. This can be on the beach, as seen in one of the images on the flyer. It could be a micro flag that is inches across sitting on your desk.
  • This is open to everyone. There is a 30 person limit. Americans born here or those who have moved here from another country.  Take as much time from the first meeting to the second to gather and start to build or to ask questions. The third meeting will be the closing ceremony. Awards and a discussion.
  • The class meetings (3) will be held on Zoom. Some familiarity with this program will be helpful. Or have someone with you who is knowledgeable. You’ll need to know how to turn on /off video. Turn on/off the sound mute, use the chat function and be able to upload your images to the link provided. Please download and install Zoom before the class begins.

The online class is provided in part by a grant received from the CT office of the Arts- Artists Respond Grant. The grant was provided to me as an artist out of a field of 278 other applicants. I was one of 73 people to be awarded this grant.  I have created this class as a fun and thought provoking way to produce art in mosaic or any other medium wanted in an online forum during the time of Covid-19.

  • Space is limited. The class is FREE but there is a suggested donation of at least $35 per person. A portion of the proceeds will go to San Lucas Toliman. Why Guatemala? This is a global pandemic. I want to support this project and these people as they are near and dear to my heart. See info on the Guatemala project.
  • You can read more about the Guatemala Mosaics project here.
